Car Capabilities

Something they never teach you at school is that you can't be perfect at everything.

Has a teacher ever told you: "Math/English/Woodwork is just not a subject suited to you. If you do your best in the subject you'll be quite capable at it, but you will find you can really excel better in another subject"?

No, they don't tell you this. Instead, you are given the idea you must and can be excellent at ALL the subjects.

That's a pity, really, because schoolkids never learn that they can't expect to be good at everything. And this can set them up for future failure and a consequent poor self image.

It also doesn't arm them for life out in the real world where they are better off focussing on their strengths in the workplace.

And when driving a car.

Not everyone can be a whiz bang car driving wizard. Not everyone can be a world champion car racer. After all, you may not have the reactions, the psychological profile, the physical dexterity, or even the neurone dexterity necessary to get the best out of a car at top speed.

As comedian Jay Leno puts it: "These guys (racers) go out and say: 'Put another quarter-pound of pressure in the tire would you, Jim? Ah, now it's perfect.' "

"How the hell do they know this stuff? Get outta here. I go along and say: 'What's that thumping noise? Oh, my tire's flat!' ".

For anyone who thinks they're really good, we suggest that they consider that wise old saying "Always remember you're unique, just like everyone else."

But, while we may not be able to be perfect and the fastest, this doesn't mean that we can't be, at the least, a very competent driver. Indeed, if we all accepted our limitations and concentrated on being very competent drivers, driving to our limitations, the crash rate on our roads would drop dramatically.

Ultimately, of course, the best driver is the one who gets there - everytime.

So let's not be perfect. Let's be one of the best.
