A US motorcyclist, Holly Ober, wondered why traffic on a Californian
freeway unexpectedly slowed down to a mere crawl. Minutes later
she found out. The drivers were reading a freeway sign that was
lit up to tell people to carry chains in their cars, because
of unsettled weather in the mountains - about 50 miles away!
It never snows in the area she was in and, while there are
signs of this nature at several other points closer to the mountains,
the authorities, in their wisdom, had put a lit up warning sign
here on the freeway and the traffic was virtually stopped. It
didn't help that it was a cold night, Holly was only wearing
summer gloves, and her hands were getting frozen into ineffectiveness.
This sort of driver distraction isn't unusual, though. There's
an animated freeway sign just south of Seattle on I-5 in the
US. It's like a giant TV screen and plays whole commercials.
Strangely enough, traffic is ALWAYS slow there. |

And the problem isn't restricted to the US.
In Seoul, for instance, there's a place where you can see
three Jumbotron billboards at the same time while crossing a
bridge. This is in a city where it has been suggested that there
are no road law, only road suggestions... |
